Counseling and psychotherapy involves a therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client that is based on primarily on respect, empathy, and confidentiality.  The exact style of counseling or therapy varies depending on the personalities of the counselor and the client, the treatment approaches used, and the particular problems that are areas of concern for you.  There are different methods I may use to deal with the problems that you wish to address; i.e., Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Strength-Based Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, Humanistic Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Mindfulness Training, Meditation, Relaxation Techniques, Eclectic Therapy, etc.  There are times when I may refer you to a physician for an evaluation to determine if you need medication.

Psychotherapy calls for a very active effort on your part.  In order for therapy to be most successful, you will need to work on the issues and strategies that we talk about, both during our sessions and at home. Therapy often leads to better relationships, resolution of specific problems, and significant reduction in feelings of anxiety, depression, stress, and distress. Psychotherapy can help you understand the behaviors, emotions, and ideas that contribute to your difficulties, help you regain a sense of control and pleasure in your life, help you restructure your priorities, teach you healthier coping techniques, better communication skills, and better problem-solving skills.
